The ICÓNICA Minor Surgery Process

Your journey to improved comfort is a quick and simple process:

The Consultation

Dr. Garcia will perform a thorough examination to confirm if a frenectomy or tori removal is the right solution for you and will explain the simple procedure in detail.

The Frenectomy Procedure

To correct a "tongue-tie" or "lip-tie," Dr. Garcia will release the tight band of tissue (the frenum). This is a very quick procedure that provides immediate release and improved range of motion.

The Tori Removal Procedure

To remove benign bony growths (tori), Dr. Garcia will smooth down the excess bone to create a more comfortable and uniform contour in your mouth, which is often necessary for a proper denture fit.
FAQ'S

Frequently Asked Questions about Frenectomy & Tori Removal

What is a frenectomy and why would I need one?

A frenectomy is a simple procedure to release a band of tissue (the frenum) that is too tight. Common reasons include:

  • For Denture Wearers:A prominent frenum under the upper lip can dislodge a maxillary (upper) denture, breaking the seal. A frenectomy is often essential for a stable and retentive fit.
  • For Children & Adults:A tight frenum under the tongue (“tongue-tie”) can restrict speech and proper swallowing.
These are common terms for a frenum that is too short, thick, or tight. A “tongue-tie” (ankyloglossia) restricts tongue movement, while a “lip-tie” can pull on the gums and, in some cases, contribute to a gap between the front teeth.
Tori (singular: torus) are benign (harmless) bony growths that can develop on the roof of the mouth or on the inside of the lower jaw. They are very common and not a health concern.
We typically only recommend removing tori if they are interfering with your quality of life. The most common reason is to allow for a proper, comfortable fit of a denture or other dental appliance. Occasionally, they are removed if they are frequently irritated or injured during eating.
No. Both procedures are performed with effective local anesthesia to ensure you are completely comfortable and feel no pain.
These are very quick and straightforward procedures. Most frenectomies or tori removals can be completed in 15 to 30 minutes.
Yes, these minor surgical procedures are performed safely and comfortably in our office while you are awake, using only local anesthesia to numb the area.
Healing is typically very fast. The areas will be tender for a few days, but most patients resume their normal activities the very next day. Complete healing of the tissue takes a couple of weeks.
Sometimes, small, dissolvable stitches are placed to help the area heal. These stitches will go away on their own and do not need to be removed.
We recommend a soft-food diet for the first few days. Avoid foods that are hot, spicy, or crunchy, as these can irritate the healing site.
Tori grow very slowly, and while it is possible for them to recur over a very long period, it is uncommon.
Yes, frenectomies and tori removal are common minor oral surgery procedures that are typically covered by most dental insurance plans. We will happily provide a complimentary benefits check for you.
